’80s pretty boy and current Working Actor Matthew Modine, best known for being upstaged by Linda Fiorentino’s perm (in Vision Quest) and Julianne Moore’s lady parts (in Short Cuts), wants the world and Cindy Adams to know that he still gets work. A lot of work. In lots of movies that will probably never play in theaters:
“Another film I made in Greece, ‘Opa,’ shows this week at the Toronto Film Festival. And my book’s out next month. And I just finished ‘Kettle of Fish,’ playing someone invaded with the spirits of Gene Simmons, Cher and Steven Tyler. And there’s the song by the girl band Pony Up, who want to do crazy sexual things to me and sing about performing a very specific special act on me, which is not something I think deejays will give much airtime. Also there’s last weekend’s No. 1 movie, ‘Transporter 2,’ in which I play a drug czar.”
This filmographic tirade comes only after exhaustive descriptions of other forthcoming Modine-ian projects such as the WB series The Bedford Diaries (”I play a sex professor who shares with his students explicit sex videos on the air”) and the Abel Ferrara movie Mary (”I’m playing Jesus.”)
It’s cool that Double M has the humility to name-check the Pony Up! song that bears his name (which, by the way, is awesome. If you haven’t already, go to iTunes and download it right now. I’ll wait. Did you do it? I’ll bet you thought that part about Phoebe Cates was pretty funny. Cool, I did too.) But instead of having a sense of humor about it, Modine seems to view it as a sign that his career’s on the upswing. We can almost picture him listening to it while he jerks off to a muted TV airing of Bye Bye Love, climaxing as the girls sing “Oh Matthew Modine, you give us creamy jeans.” Gross Anatomy, indeed.
