Hysterical breeder paranoia infects Massachusetts legislature

captmaea10201021956gay_marriage_maea102.jpg Not that I’m planning on getting married anytime soon anyway, but is there anything more depressing than acheiving genuine social progress only to let it potentially backslide?

Only in Massachusetts could the will of such a small legislative minority (in this case, the Republicans, needing only 25% of the vote to advance the measure) threaten this much damage. And just when we’d finally come to our senses and elected a Democrat governor.
The worst part of this is envisioning the schadenfreude-induced spasms of exultant self-abuse that will surely be going on between Kerry Healey and her shower nozzle tomorrow morning. No, scratch that. The worst part is that any victory on the part of foam-mouthed, Bible-thumping, “Won’t someone please think of the children?!” fascists is just going to help convince Der Romneyfeuhrer that he can be President.

And that is a scary, scary thing.

Well, let’s just say that there’s a list of 62 legislators who won’t be getting Christmas cards next year… and there are a few on the list who were a surprise… it IS the perfect gift to launch a Romney presidential bid, and is already being billed as Patrick’s first flub (just like Clinton, did he learn nothing of supporting the gays out of the block? really, the people of Brockton won’t stand for that…)

Oh well. If such healthy couples as Britney and Federline can’t make it work, what hope would we gays have, anyway?

What pisses me off is the familiar cry of “let the people vote.” Hmm, should we have let the people vote about whether blacks should be a protected class 50 years ago? Hell no - the “people” can’t be trusted in certain situations; there are certain rights which should be granted regardless of whether the majority of the people believe in them. Yes, I believe in a democratic vote, but there’s a reason we have a Bill of Rights. The rights of our black citizens were too important to leave up to a bunch of racist hicks, and now the rights of our gay citizens are too important to leave up to a slew of Bible-thumping homophobes. Guess what people? IT’S OK to have certain rights granted without a vote. Let’s put women’s suffrage to a vote and see how many Jesus freak soccer moms lose their shit.
