So The View has settled on two new hosts to fill the wide swath of couch vacated by Star and Rosie, and - surprise! - it’s the two most obvious suspects, Sherri Shepherd and Whoopi Goldberg.
The estrofest’s ratings have taken a predictable slide since Rosie’s, uh, unanticipated departure, and if ABC’s hope is that this slate will turn the tide, I think they’re out of luck. Goldberg has failed on television again and again, from her talk show to her sitcom, and both she and Shepherd are too benign to create the cutthroat controversy that The View needs to thrive. I can’t see either bringing anything like Rosie’s obstinate honesty or Star’s epic self-absorption to the panel.
Since the show needed at least one African-American panelist, Mo’Nique or Wanda Sykes would have been edgier, funnier choices. And I still think Kathy Griffin would ultimately have been the best option to keep the show both live-wire funny and potentially controversial.
Oh, well. I guess it’s just one less reason to stay home on weekdays.
Oh, I’m not sure about Sherri, but I wouldn’t put it past Whoopi to rake in controversy- after all, any one who had seen Rosie on her own talk show wouldn’t have expected the great jaws of controversy that erupted when she went on the air…
The producers have smelled blood in the water and what it does to the ratings, and nobody on the panel gonna be able to bring Whoopi down if it’s taken… Time will tell, but I think I’m gonna be right here…
Who are these highly paid executives who make these stupid decisions? First, a remake of “The Women”(straight to DVD), “Sex And The City” to the big screen{story concluded, actors too old, nobody cares anymore) and now Whoopi and Sherri. Whoopi, during her guest stints has seemed so benign. I am hoping I am wrong and she forces Elisabeth’s firing or resignation. Go to it, Whoopi!
